The International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC), with over 10,000 members, recently hosted two webinars related to Trustworthy content/records management for its members. There were over 200 participants in both webinars, each qualifying the participant to receive continuing education credits.

The first session titled “Securing and Protecting your Mission Critical Records” was held on May 6, 2020, and is summarized below:

In today’s environment, most agencies are storing their official records in an electronic environment. Most of these environments are not secured to the degree necessary to prevent unauthorized record modification and/or deletion and leaves the environment prone to hacking and potential ransomware. The electronic records/content standards industry committees have developed several standards and best practices related to Trustworthy electronic records management to protect mission-critical records. This discussion will focus on the components of electronic record storage technologies and other techniques necessary to protect mission-critical official records.

Topics covered what to consider related to protecting agency records, managing electronic records environment ensuring trustworthiness today, along with change management related to how to ensure records are properly stored and protected. The term “environment” is used rather than “solution” as the trustworthiness of electronic record keeping is not only software and hardware but also policies, procedures, and methodologies combined. Over 200 IIMC members participated in this discussion
